ON-SITE

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For a given site, especially a High/Moderate Risk site, a thorough UXO Risk Assessment conducted by a professional will inform a Stage 3 UXO mitigation plan to clearly communicate the most suitable approach, based on the assessed risks and the nature of the planned works.

  • A UXO Watching Brief is a common on-site mitigation measure used during mechanical ground works activities in areas assessed to be at higher risk for UXO, with a qualified UXO specialist monitoring excavation and other intrusive works in real time to identify and manage potential explosive hazards. The specialist ensures that any suspicious objects are safely assessed and that appropriate emergency procedures are followed if ordnance is discovered. While it is very commonly applied, it is by no means a ‘standard requirement’ and only needs to be used when recommended by a Detailed UXO Risk Assessment provided by a professional.

  • Based on the level of risk assessed for a given site, and the nature of the planned works, physical on-site UXO surveys vary in their execution and can be classed as - Intrusive UXO Surveys: Physically penetrating or disturbing the ground to identify and investigate suspected explosive hazards. This may include digging, drilling, probing, or mechanical excavation under strict safety protocols. Examples of such surveys are Downhole Magnetometry (for Boreholing) and Cone-Penetration Testing Magnetometry (for Piling works).

Non-intrusive UXO surveys: Investigative methods that detect potential unexploded ordnance without disturbing the ground. These rely on surface magnetometers, electromagnetic sensors, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), to identify anomalies that could indicate buried munitions. Examples of such surveys are Detector Sweep and Search & Clear.

  • Artios provide a range of UXO Risk Management services bespoke to your project, from desktop risk assessments to on-site support. We recommend on-site mitigation measures that strike an optimal balance between effectiveness and cost-efficiency. Get in touch with our team for a risk management solution designed to fit your needs.

  • A qualified UXO Engineer, present at your site providing UXO risk mitigation survey/support will be able to identify actual ordnance from miscellaneous metal scrap/false alarms.

Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose.

What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. What sets us apart isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to understand, explore, and create with purpose at every turn.
